How to create a ZIP
Choose files
Add files, or a whole folder where your browser can pick one. Add more, or remove any, before you continue.
Configure
Pick Store, Balanced or Maximum compression and name the archive.
Create and download
Press Create ZIP, check the size it reports, then download it.
What to know
- Your files are kept exactly. Each file goes in byte for byte, either stored as it is or deflated, with its modified date. The files you chose are not changed.
- Store, Balanced or Maximum. Store keeps the bytes uncompressed and is the fastest. Balanced and Maximum use Deflate at level 6 and 9, which is slower for a smaller ZIP.
- Already-compressed files may not shrink. Photos, videos, PDFs and other archives are compressed already, and every file adds a little header data, so the ZIP can end up slightly larger than the files. The result shows the real size and change.
- Folders and paths. Files from a folder keep their folder paths. Folder picking depends on your browser: if there is no Add folder button, choose files instead. Paths with .. segments, drive letters or a leading slash are refused.
- Same name twice. Two files with the same path are never overwritten. The second is saved as name (2).ext, the third as (3), and the list shows each new name before you create the ZIP. Names that differ only by case count as the same.
- Names in other languages. File names are stored as UTF-8, so accents, emoji and non-Latin scripts keep their spelling in current ZIP tools.
Limits
- 2,000
- 1 GB
- 512 MB
Files are read in slices by a background thread (a Web Worker) and the ZIP is built piece by piece, but the finished ZIP is held in your browser until you download it, so very large totals depend on your device’s memory. Cancel stops the work at once and keeps nothing.
What happens to your files
Everything runs in your browser. Your files and their names are not uploaded and are not sent to any server. They are not saved in the browser and not put in the page address. Refreshing or closing the tab discards them. The tool never opens, runs or previews what is inside an archive, and a download does not mean a file is safe. See Privacy.
Not included
- Passwords and encryption
- Split (multi-part) ZIPs
- Other formats such as 7z, RAR or TAR
- Empty folders (only files are added)
Frequently asked questions
Why is my ZIP not smaller?
The files are probably compressed already, such as JPEG, MP4 or PDF. Store is then as good as Maximum, and much faster.
Can I add a folder?
Yes, where your browser supports it: use Add folder or drop the folder on the page. Otherwise add its files directly.
Will the ZIP open on my computer?
Yes. It is a standard ZIP that Windows, macOS, Linux and phones open.
Is my file uploaded?
No. It is read and processed in your browser. The site only delivers the page and its code.
Do I need an account?
No. The tool is free and needs no sign-in.
