How to split a PDF
Choose a PDF
Drop or choose one PDF file.
Pick a mode
Extract pages, Individual pages or Custom ranges. They are described below.
Enter pages or ranges
If the mode needs them, type the pages or ranges you want, such as 1, 3-5, 8.
Split and download
Press Extract pages or Split PDF, then download the files one by one or as a ZIP.
The three modes
Each run reads the original file again. Results are never built from previous results.
| Mode | What you enter | What you get |
|---|---|---|
Page numbers and ranges, such as 1, 3-5, 8. | One PDF with the selected pages. Pages keep the order they have in the original, and a page typed twice is included once, so 5, 1-3, 2 gives pages 1, 2, 3 and 5. Example name: report-pages-1_3-5_8.pdf (a single page: report-page-4.pdf). | |
| Nothing. | One PDF per page, such as report-page-001.pdf and report-page-002.pdf. Download each one, or all of them as one ZIP. | |
One or more range fields. Each field is one page (4) or one range (1-3). You can add up to 50 fields. | One PDF per field, such as report-pages-1-3.pdf and report-pages-4-6.pdf for 1-3 and 4-6. Ranges may overlap, so a page can appear in several files. Each field shows how many pages its PDF will have before you split. Several files can be downloaded as a ZIP. |
Writing pages and ranges
Page numbers start at 1. Write a range from low to high with a hyphen, such as 3-5, and separate entries with commas. Nothing is ignored silently: an entry that can’t be read is marked with a specific message, and the button stays disabled until every entry is valid.
| You type | Result | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Yes: Pages 1, 3, 4, 5 and 8 | Separate entries with commas. Spaces are fine, so 1 , 3 - 5 works too. | |
| Yes: Pages 2, 3 and 4 | A page that appears twice is included once when extracting. | |
| No: Error | Write ranges from low to high: 3-5. | |
| No: Error | Pages start at 1. | |
| No: Error in a 12-page PDF | The page is beyond the last page of the file. |
These are also rejected, each with its own message:
- Empty entries, such as 1,,3 or a trailing comma.
- Negative numbers and decimals, such as 2.5.
- Open ranges, such as 3-.
- Letters and other symbols.
- Pages beyond the last page of the PDF.
What is kept and what may be lost
The split files are newly generated PDFs, so some features of the original may not carry over. The original file is never changed.
| Item | In the split files | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Yes: Kept | The visible content of every selected page stays as it is. | |
| Yes: Kept | Page size, portrait and landscape orientation, and page rotation stay as they are. | |
| No: May not be preserved | Interactive fields may stop working. | |
| No: May not be preserved | The outline of the original may be missing. | |
| No: May not be preserved | Files embedded in the PDF may be missing. | |
| No: May not be preserved | Document-level details such as title and author may not carry over. | |
| No: Not valid | Splitting changes the document, so a digital signature in the original will not be valid in the split files. |
- Size is not guaranteed. The output files are not guaranteed to be smaller. Pages that share fonts or images each carry their own copy, so the split files together can be larger than the original.
- Out of date results. If you change the file, the mode or the pages, existing results are marked “Out of date”. Run the split again to get new files.
- Signed PDFs. If the original is digitally signed, the signature will not be valid in the split files. Keep the original if you need the signature.
- Files are checked by reading them. A file is accepted based on its contents, not its extension. Damaged or unsupported files are rejected with a message.
Limits
- 100 MB
- 2,000
- 50
- 4,000
Overlapping ranges count each page every time it is used. A run also stops with a clear message if the outputs together grow past 500 MB. These are application limits. Devices with little memory, especially phones, may fail sooner.
What happens to your file
The PDF is split by code running in your browser tab, in a background Web Worker, and is not uploaded. Your original file is never changed. Results stay in memory until you clear or replace them, or close the page. See Privacy.
Protected PDFs
- Password-protected and encrypted PDFs are rejected.
- This includes PDFs that open without a password but have restrictions or encryption.
- The tool does not remove or bypass passwords.
Troubleshooting
The button is disabled
Fix the entries marked in red. Every entry must be valid before you can split. Check that pages are whole numbers of 1 or more, that ranges run low to high (3-5, not 5-3), that entries are separated by single commas, and that no page is beyond the last page.
A file was rejected as password-protected
Remove the protection in an app you trust that has the password, save the PDF, then add it again. This tool does not remove passwords.
A file is damaged or can't be read
Re-save or export it as a PDF from the app that created it, then add it again. The tool checks a file by reading it, so renaming a file to .pdf does not help.
The split files are larger than the original
This can happen. Each output is a new file, and pages that share fonts or images each carry their own copy. Splitting is not compression, and the sizes are not guaranteed.
Frequently asked questions
Are my PDFs uploaded?
No. They are split in your browser. The site only delivers the page and its code.
Can I reorder pages?
No. Extracted pages keep their original order. With custom ranges, the files are created in the order of the fields, but the pages inside each range keep the order of the document.
Can I merge the results back?
Yes, with the Merge PDF tool.
Do I need an account?
No. The tool is free and needs no sign-in.
