Image Metadata Viewer & Remover

See what JPEG photos say about where and how they were taken, and remove it. JPEG only for now; your files stay on your device.

Drop JPEG images here

JPEG only (.jpg, .jpeg), up to 50 MB each. PNG and WebP aren't supported yet.

Files stay on your device. Nothing is uploaded.

How to view and remove image metadata

  1. Add JPEG images

Drop or choose up to 50 JPEG files (.jpg or .jpeg). PNG and WebP are not supported yet.

  2. View metadata

Select an image to see the metadata it carries, grouped as Location, Camera, Capture and Other.

  3. Remove metadata

Press Remove metadata. The tool cleans every file in the list.

  4. Review and download

Check each result, then download files one by one or as a single ZIP.

What the viewer shows

Metadata is extra information stored inside a photo file, such as where and when it was taken and with what camera. Fields are grouped as below. A group with nothing to show says “None found”.

Metadata groups
GroupWhat it can include
LocationGPS coordinates, altitude, GPS time, and place names stored in IPTC or XMP
CameraMake, model, lens, serial numbers, owner name
CaptureDate and time, exposure, aperture, ISO, focal length, flash and similar settings
OtherSoftware, author, copyright, title, description, comments, keywords, embedded preview image
  • Coordinates are numbers only. GPS coordinates are shown as numbers. There is no map and no place lookup, and nothing is sent anywhere.
  • Empty results. “This file contains no metadata” means the file has no metadata blocks at all. “No supported metadata detected” means it has metadata blocks, but none of the fields this tool shows.

What removal does

For normal photos, the metadata segments are cut out and the compressed image data is copied unchanged. The picture is not re-encoded, so there is no quality loss.

JPEG data removed and kept
RemovedKept on purpose
JPEGEXIF (including GPS and the embedded preview), XMP, IPTC/Photoshop data, JPEG comments, JFIF thumbnails, FlashPix data, multi-picture data, Content Credentials (JUMBF), and anything stored after the end of the image, such as extra previews or motion-photo dataThe ICC colour profile, the Adobe colour-transform marker and the JFIF header, because they affect how the picture displays. Unrecognised application segments are also kept and listed.
  • Rotated photos are re-encoded. Some cameras store a photo turned or mirrored and rely on an EXIF orientation tag. Removing that tag would make the photo display sideways, so those photos are turned upright and re-encoded at JPEG quality 92%. They are marked “Re-encoded”. That is not lossless, and colours are converted to sRGB because the ICC profile isn’t kept in that case.
  • Each result is checked. Every cleaned file is read again with the same parser and decoded. “Supported metadata removed” is shown only when that check passes. Otherwise an error is shown and no file is offered.

What happens to your files

Metadata is read and removed by code running in your browser tab. Nothing is uploaded. Your original files are never changed, and results stay in memory until you remove them or close the page. See Privacy.

Cleaned files are named like photo-cleaned.jpg; duplicates get “ (2)”.

What this tool can’t do

  • It can’t remove things visible in the picture, such as faces, signs, text, screens or reflections.
  • It doesn’t change your original files, or copies already shared or uploaded elsewhere.
  • It can’t guarantee that every proprietary or unknown field is removed. Unrecognised segments are kept.

Troubleshooting

A file was rejected

The reason is shown in the list. Only JPEG files work in this release: PNG, WebP, HEIC, GIF and other formats are not supported. Damaged files and files over the limits are also rejected, and very large images may be refused on phones.

The viewer says there is no metadata

Either the file has no metadata blocks, or it has some but none of the fields shown here. Many apps and sites already strip metadata when you share a photo.

The result is marked “Re-encoded”

The photo was stored turned or mirrored with an EXIF orientation tag. To keep it upright without that tag, it was rotated and saved again at quality 92% in sRGB. Photos whose orientation is already normal are cleaned without re-encoding.

An error was shown and no file was offered

The cleaned file did not pass the check (read again and decoded). Nothing is offered in that case. Try the image on its own, or use a different copy of the file.

Frequently asked questions

Are my images uploaded?

No. They are processed in your browser. The site only delivers the page and its code.

Does it work with PNG or WebP?

Not yet. This release supports JPEG (.jpg and .jpeg) only.

Will removing metadata reduce image quality?

Not for normal photos: the image data is copied unchanged. Photos that need turning upright because of an orientation tag are re-encoded, and those are marked.

Can I make the file smaller?

Metadata is usually a small part of a file. To reduce size, use the Image Compressor.

Does converting a file remove metadata too?

Yes, but the Image Converter always re-encodes the picture. This tool avoids that for normal photos.

Do I need an account?

No. The tool is free and needs no sign-in.
