Image Compressor

Make JPEG, PNG and WebP images smaller. Your files stay on your device.

Drop images here

JPEG, PNG or WebP. Up to 50 images, 50 MB each, up to 40 megapixels.

Files stay on your device. Nothing is uploaded.

How to compress images

  1. Add images

Drop or choose up to 50 JPEG, PNG or WebP files. Anything that can’t be used is listed with the reason.

  2. Pick settings

Choose a format, a quality (Smart is the default) and, optionally, a maximum size. Nothing runs until you press Compress.

  3. Compress and download

Check sizes and compare before and after, then download files one by one or as a single ZIP.

Choosing quality and format

Lower quality means smaller files with less fine detail. The default, Smart (Recommended), classifies each image as a photo or a graphic such as a screenshot, text, logo or flat artwork. For photos it picks the lowest JPEG or WebP quality (50% to 85%) whose result still looks the same as the original, measured with a structural-similarity check on a sample of the image. For graphics it keeps sharp text and edges: JPEG uses full color resolution and a stricter check (70% to 92%). Each result shows what Smart chose, for example “Photo: quality 60%”. To choose the quality yourself, use Smaller file (60%), Balanced (75%), High quality (85%) or Custom (10% to 100%). In one of our tests, an iPhone JPEG photo went from 902 KB to 220 KB with Smart.

JPEG is encoded with MozJPEG, WebP with libwebp and lossless PNG with OxiPNG: WebAssembly builds from the jSquash project that run in your browser and are loaded only when an image is saved in that format. If they can’t load, your browser’s built-in encoder is used instead. At 90% or higher, JPEG keeps full color resolution.

Output formats compared
FormatBest forTransparencyHow it gets smaller
JPEGPhotosNo: Filled with your background colorQuality setting
WebPPhotos and graphicsYes: KeptQuality setting. With Smart, graphics may be saved losslessly when that is smaller.
PNGScreenshots, logos, sharp edgesYes: Kept“Reduce colors” uses at most 256 colors. With Smart, colors are reduced only when the check finds no visible difference; otherwise the PNG is saved losslessly. “Lossless” keeps every pixel (only the faintest semi-transparent pixels can shift slightly) and recompresses the file; savings depend on how the original was saved.
  • Limit size. Scales images down to fit the width and height you set, keeping proportions and never enlarging. For phone photos this often saves more than lowering quality.
  • No bigger files. If the result isn’t smaller and you didn’t resize or convert, your original is kept and marked “Original kept”.

What happens to your files

Images are compressed by code running in your browser tab and are not uploaded. Results stay in memory until you remove them or close the page. Your settings (never your files) are remembered in this browser. You can confirm this in the Network tab of your browser’s developer tools. See Privacy.

What changes in the output

  • EXIF metadata, including camera details and GPS location, is removed. Files kept unchanged, because they couldn’t be made smaller, are your originals with their metadata.
  • Photo orientation is applied to the pixels.
  • Colors are converted to sRGB.
  • Transparency saved as JPEG is filled with your background color.
  • “Reduce colors” changes PNG pixels slightly.

Troubleshooting

A file was rejected

The reason is shown in the list. Only still JPEG, PNG and WebP images work: GIF, HEIC, AVIF, BMP, TIFF, SVG, PDF and animated images are not supported (convert HEIC photos with HEIC to JPG first). Damaged files and files over the limits are also rejected.

The WebP option is turned off

WebP works in every current browser, including Safari on iPhone and iPad. The option is only turned off in very old browsers without WebAssembly. Choose JPEG instead.

An image failed with a memory message

Your device ran out of memory. Close other tabs, try the image on its own, or turn on “Limit size”, then press Retry.

My file didn't get smaller

It may already be well compressed. Try a lower quality, “Limit size” or another format; for PNG, make sure “Reduce colors” is selected. Photos saved as PNG shrink most as WebP or JPEG: when you save a photo as PNG, the result shows how much smaller it would be.

My images disappeared after reloading

Files are never stored, so reloading clears them. Download what you need first.

Frequently asked questions

Are my images uploaded?

No. They are processed in your browser. The site only delivers the page and its code.

Will compressing reduce quality?

JPEG, WebP and “Reduce colors” PNG change pixels, often invisibly; “Lossless” PNG doesn’t. Use Compare to check before downloading.

Which quality should I choose?

Smart suits most images because it chooses per image. If you prefer to decide yourself, Balanced suits most photos; use High quality for text and sharp edges, and Smaller file when size matters most.

Can I convert between formats?

Yes, choose the output format in Settings. To change format without reducing colors or resizing, use the Image Converter.

Do I need an account?

No. The tool is free and needs no sign-in.

Which browsers are supported?

Recent Chrome, Edge, Firefox and Safari. The page checks what your browser can do and tells you if something isn’t available.
