How to compress an image to a file size
Add images
Drop or choose up to 50 still JPEG, PNG or WebP files. The same limit applies to each one.
Pick a limit
Choose 20 KB to 1 MB or enter your own. Output is JPEG unless you choose WebP.
Compress and check
Each image shows whether it got under the limit. Compare before and after, then download.
How the limit is reached
The tool tries a high quality first, then lowers it step by step, measuring the real file size each time. If even the minimum quality is too large and Reduce dimensions is on, it scales the image down, keeping its shape, and tries again. Every attempt starts from your original image.
| Output | Transparency | Typical result | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| No: Filled with your background color (white by default) | Works everywhere | The default. | |
| Yes: Kept | Often smaller at the same quality | Not every browser can create WebP; the option is turned off there. |
- Achievable, not exact. Files end up below your limit where possible, usually a little under it. Very small limits for large photos may need visibly lower quality or much smaller dimensions.
- When it can't be reached. The image is marked “Could not reach limit” with the reason. Its smallest version can still be downloaded, clearly labelled as over the limit.
- Units. 1 KB is 1,000 bytes and 1 MB is 1,000,000 bytes. Some systems show sizes in 1,024-byte units, which look slightly smaller.
- Already small enough. Images already under the limit are kept as they are, unless you turn that off under Advanced options.

What happens to your files
Images are compressed by code running in your browser tab and are not uploaded. Your original files are never changed. Results stay in memory until you remove them or close the page. See Privacy.
What changes in the output
- Compression is lossy: quality goes down to reach the size.
- Dimensions may be reduced if Reduce dimensions is on.
- EXIF metadata, including camera details and GPS location, is not kept. A file already under the limit that is kept unchanged keeps its metadata.
- Photo orientation is applied and colors are converted to sRGB.
Troubleshooting
An image couldn't reach the limit
Turn on Reduce dimensions, lower the minimum quality under Advanced options, or choose a larger limit, then compress again.
The result looks blurry or blocky
The limit is tight for this image. Raise the minimum quality or the limit, and use Compare to check text and fine detail.
Why isn't there a PNG option?
PNG has no quality setting to trade for size, so a size limit can’t be targeted reliably. Use JPEG or WebP, or the Image Compressor for smaller PNGs.
A file was rejected
Only still JPEG, PNG and WebP images work. Animated images, other formats, damaged files and files over the limits above are not supported.
Frequently asked questions
Are my images uploaded?
No. They are compressed in your browser. The site only delivers the page and its code.
Will the file be exactly the size I choose?
No. It will be at or under the limit when that’s achievable, often slightly under.
Can I set a different limit per image?
Not at the moment. One limit applies to every image in the batch.
Do I need an account?
No. The tool is free and needs no sign-in.
