How to trim a video
Choose a video
Pick or drop one MP4, MOV, WebM, MKV or MPEG-TS file.
Set the section
Drag the start and end handles under the video, or type exact times. Press Preview selection to watch just that part.
Pick a method and trim
Precise cut re-encodes for exact frames; Fast cut copies without re-encoding. Press Trim Video, then play and download the result.
What to know
- Precise cut. The video is re-encoded so the picture starts and ends on the frames at your times, within about one frame. Audio is cut at its own packet boundaries, so it can differ by a few hundredths of a second. The saved length is checked to be within 0.25 seconds of your selection, and audio and video are checked to start within 0.25 seconds of each other. Re-encoding loses a little quality.
- Fast cut (not exact). The video and audio are copied without re-encoding, so quality is unchanged and it is quick. But video can only start on a keyframe, so the copy begins at the keyframe at or before your start. After the run the page tells you where it really began. The extra seconds before your start may remain inside the file: many players hide them, others show them. Use Precise cut when that matters.
- Which methods are offered. Precise cut needs your browser to decode and encode the video, and is not offered for HDR or wide-colour video. Fast cut keeps the original container (MP4, MOV, WebM or MKV) and is not offered for MPEG-TS, where only Precise cut works. If a method cannot work for your file, the page says why instead of switching quietly.
- Keyboard and touch. The two handles are sliders: arrow keys move the focused handle, Page Up and Page Down move it further. On a touch screen only a sideways drag moves a handle, so the page still scrolls when you swipe up or down. The start and end fields take times such as 75.5 or 1:15.5.
- One section only. The tool keeps a single section. Joining, several selections, cropping, effects and captions are not part of it.
Supported files
The tools open one MP4, MOV, WebM, MKV or MPEG-TS file at a time. Tested: H.264 video with AAC audio in MP4, MOV, MKV and MPEG-TS, VP9 video with Opus audio in WebM, and HEVC in MP4 (which can be muted and fast-cut anywhere, but only re-encoded where your browser can decode it). MPEG-TS means plain 188-byte .ts files; 192-byte camcorder and Blu-ray streams (.m2ts, AVCHD .mts) are not opened because their audio cannot be read reliably, and a fast cut is not offered for MPEG-TS. Other codecs inside these containers are tried, but whether they work depends on your browser; the tool says so in plain words when it cannot handle a file, and tells a damaged file apart from an unsupported one.
Only the main video track and its main audio track are used. Other tracks, subtitles, chapters and descriptive tags (title, location, creation tool) are not kept. The picture’s rotation and shape are kept, and the frame rate is never changed. Transparency is not kept when a video is re-encoded.

- 500 MB
The video is read from your disk in small pieces, but the finished file is built in memory and then copied once for download, and decoded frames take memory while a run is going, so long or high-resolution videos can fail on phones and small computers. Speed depends entirely on your device and browser, and a run can take longer than the video itself. Cancel stops the work at once and keeps nothing.
What happens to your files
Everything runs in your browser. Your video, its file name and its metadata are not uploaded and are not sent to any server. They are not saved in the browser and not put in the page address. Refreshing or closing the tab discards them, and playback and results use temporary addresses that exist only on your device. See Privacy.
Need to work on the sound instead? Try the Audio Trimmer or the Audio Volume Changer for audio files.

Frequently asked questions
Why does a fast cut start earlier than I chose?
Compressed video stores whole pictures only at keyframes, often a second or more apart. Copying without re-encoding can only begin at one. The page reports the real start so you are not misled.
Can I be sure the earlier part is gone from a fast cut?
No. A fast cut may still store the frames before your start, hidden by most players. If you need them gone, use Precise cut.
Does trimming change the picture size?
No. The size, shape and rotation are kept (a precise cut rounds odd sizes down to even numbers).
Is my file uploaded?
No. It is read and processed in your browser. The site only delivers the page and its code.
Do I need an account?
No. The tool is free and needs no sign-in.
